The personal info, rants, and creative works have all moved elsewhere.
I've moved my web page officially to
www.louruppert.com, as the burden of maintaining two distinct
sets of pages is too much for me to bear. Check it out.
Meanwhile, I'll be using this space to put class notes and pointers to documentation
for people I'm training to be computer workers for the church.
I have some Linux tutorials which I'm offering from this page, for now. They are
in
.ppt format, which can be viewed both in
Microsoft PowerPoint, and in
OpenOffice.
- Seminar 1 - An overview of some of the concepts
behind Linux, and some of the reasons why we chose it as our main operating system
at UCF.
- Seminar 2 - A review of the ideas behind a
filesystem, and an overview of some of the terminology and concepts someone might
run into when using Linux.
Keep in mind that these are simply overviews. Much of learning any skill is knowing the
ideas behind it. Familiarity with theory will help you to understand things more quickly
the same way that some knowledge of Latin will help you to understand more English words
without having to explicitly look each one up. As far as the specifics go, as with anything,
there is no substitute for practice, experimentation, and experience. You will not learn
Linux solely by reading a book or by looking at my bland Powerpoint slides. Both are merely
guidelines to help you get experience. Everything I know is based on tinkering, so if you
want what I've got, you'll need to adopt that method and make it your own.
